A: All patients scheduled for office based surgery/dental procedures should be assigned an anesthesia risk score, using the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score. Patients with an ASA I or II are candidates for anesthesia. These patients range from normal healthy to those with mild systemic disease. For patients classed as ASA III, (those with more severe systemic disease, controlled stable disease or BMI >40), they may be acceptable candidates but should undergo a review by an anesthesiologist of the patient's medical history and recent labs/tests. Patients with an ASA score of IV should not undergo surgery in the office setting.
